Christmas party in what feels like summer weather to us “Mainahs”

This morning was the yearly Christmas party for my Mom’s group. I’ve been looking forward to it, and have been trying to get the kids excited too (make that R!) I got all my gifts purchased for the gift exchange, which was no small feat. The limit was $20HKD. That only works out to $2.67 USD. Um, YEAH, that’s easy to find…..not. A gift for a 10 year old boy for 3 bucks. Suuuure. Anyway, I was successful (ok, I went a little over…sue me!), and even got brownies made for the big day. And not just any brownies, the Libby brownies….from scratch even! I did have a minor catastrophe while making them however. Actually, I had two, now that I think of it. My oven door broke, so that was a pain, and certainly counts as one. But more importantly, I had no baking powder. I had baking SODA, but no powder. If any of you are not bakers, let me assure you now, THEY ARE NOT THE SAME! I called my friend B, who has lived on foreign soil much longer than I, knowing she would have a solution. She did, because it has happened to her and many others, and she solved my problem. For those of you who care, you can replace 1 tsp of baking powder with 1/4 tsp of baking soda and 1/2 tsp of cream of tartar. It worked great. It is now written on a post it note in my cabinet. Smile The brownies were saved and they came out very well. Yay!

Where was I? I am so easily distracted….

Oh yes, the party. The gang and I got out of the house pretty much on time. We walked to the bus stop, rode to the train station, got on the right train, and met my friend B (the baking savior) so we could get on the right bus and get to this place. I had two children who did not want to be there, so that was interesting. ugh. We did arrive and everyone had a fun time. All the kids got to make crafts, eat some junk food, get some gifts and make a few new friends.

An interesting observation, all these types of get togethers are held in the community rooms of apartment complexes where the moms live. No one has homes (apartments) large enough to hold everyone and there are no church buildings to speak of that are available for this type of thing. There are no other options really. So, the groups reserve the conference rooms and play rooms for a specific time, and when your time is up, management comes and politely tells you to get out. There is no lingering, and I always feel a time pressure. It’s very, very different.

Glad to hear your brownies came out yummy. It’s good to hear that the kids are making friends. We have been praying for them to meet kids their ages. Enjoy the nice weather we are suppose to get up to 8 inches of snow tonight!
