a fun day with the kiddos
This morning I had the pleasure of taking four anxious, scared, and in one case, hysterical children to have shots. The excitement for the move to HKG was tarnished a bit when they discovered the two events were related. “You mean, we have to have shots to move to HKG?! Why in the world are we moving then?!?!” The children were not at all impressed with the idea of shots being necessary.
Frankly, I wasn’t too thrilled either. Not only did I have to get a shot too, but I had to force my children to get their shots. (Gimme a shot any day!) For two of the four children, I had to physically restrain them and force the issue, and one of those two had some serious adrenaline pumping through their body and it was no small task to hold ‘em down. I had warned them before we went in that crying was fine, but outright loss of control was not. I outlined the consequences (harsh ones) to those that did not cooperate and tried to fight me as well as a promised reward for cooperation (I am not above bribery in some most situations) and everyone was clear. Yet, when it came time for this adrenaline charged child to have her shot, she screamed at me, “I don’t care WHAT you do to me or what you take away from me, I will not get his shot.” Sigh. So much for threats and bribery.
However, my two year old didn’t even whimper. Not a tear. Not a cry. Just, “OW!” and went on her way. The other did fine…just some tears and a bit of resistance. THAT I can handle! By the time we got done I was wiped out! Actually, I’m still exhausted. We’ve all got achy left arms and we are a tad bit cranky. I’ve got one napping and the others are watching a new dvd (so Mommy can nap…I am no fool!) You can bet we went someplace fun after the “event” to get everyone to stop crying. I got a dvd for the kiddos and a certain little boy got to spend his birthday money. (Thanks UD, AL, E and S!)
Whew.
Hrm, I wonder what time that maid and babysitter will show up this afternoon……

Sorry to hear that you had to go through that today. Remember it is one more thing to check off the list of things to do before moving. Hopefully the list is getting smaller.
