updates!

We have been in a lousy hotel, with undependable internet access, so that’s why there haven’t been many posts. We changed hotels on Monday and are in a beautiful place now. I’m still working on pictures, so hang in there.

Here are some of my miscellaneous observations about Hong Kong…..

It is incredibly clean. There is no litter. None. I have not seen one cigarette butt anywhere. It is simply amazing! They have crazy fines for littering and it must be effective.

Continuing on with the clean theme, you can practically eat of the floor in the mall. It is white marble and it’s spotless. Tracy, you could totally live here. BAH!

Driving on the left side of the road is wrong. It’s just wrong. It messes me up when I go up stairs, or look for the up escalator too, because everything is on the left. Anyone who ever went to public school remembers the mantra “Stay to the right” as you went up stairs, or navigated the halls. It’s ingrained in all of us, but here, it’s the opposite. You have to stay to the left and trying to cross the street is nuts. Traffic is going the “wrong” way. They do have cool crossing signs here. They beep to tell you when to cross, as well as show you the green man walking. It beeps quickly when it’s time to walk, and starts to slow down to warn you that you’d better hustle to make it across. The drivers do not wait for you, so you’d best get yourself over there.

People take their pet birds out for walks. (No, I am not making this up). You’ll see older men (usually) out walking around with a bird cage, and a song bird inside.

The Hong Kong natives are extremely nice and very helpful. If someone sees you on the street with your map out, they will stop and ask if you need any help. Crazy, huh?

A quirky thing is that the people here want so much to please you that they will say “OK”, or “Yes’ even if they have no idea what you want. It can be frustrating at times, lol.

If you go to McDonald’s, you can get French fries or corn with your burger.

If you go to Pizza Hut, you can order a pizza with duck and mandarin oranges on top. Maybe you would prefer seafood pizza with thousand island dressing instead of sauce….yum. They will deliver your pizza to you from the back of a moped with a doghouse looking thing on it to keep the pizza warm.

We are heading out to breakfast and then to a mom’s group. I’ll get to meet my new online buddy in person, which will be fun. I’ll try to update you more tonight. At least this is something. Smile

HAHAHA. As soon as you went on about the cleaning I was thinking, “HK is my heaven!”. I love it. Can’t wait to visit you there and eat off the floor. hehehe. And for the record, people in the states will stop and ask you if you need directions, too. Although while they distract you with the map, they are usually picking your pockets. Not a good comparison, I suppose. :) Pizza with a duck on it? How do they keep the duck from flying away? Is it because they are attracted to the scent of the oranges? hrm. I might find this interesting enough to order when I visit. Happy to see updates and thrilled the lack of writing was only because of poor internet connections - funny because aren’t you in the technology capital of the world?? ;) And wait.. married to Mr. Engineer Fix-it? Finding myself disappointed in J. (kidding)

DEANNE!!! I am loving reading your posts!!! I remember HK looking clean, but I’m not sure how clean it really was. Hopefully it has changed. I was amazed when I would see a sign at an elevator that actually said, “NO SPITTING!” I asked our friends about it and he said that “spitting” is pretty common there…what we would call…I can’t believe I’m saying this…hockin’ a luegy….I am truly LOL typing this!

I can’t wait to hear more!!
