today is the day (and more)

Today is the day Daddy comes home and boy, do we have some excited people in this house! WAHOOOOOOTIE (to quote a friend)!!!! Laughing

On another happy note R went to the orthodontist for her maintenance appointment. She has been a real trooper about having us turn her top appliance every evening. (She has two…one on top, one on bottom). We have been doing it every single night (per instructions) and we have been praising her for her compliance and willing attitude (something she typically struggles with). It’s not always fun and can be quite uncomfortable. Cry

She walked into the office, went around the corner to see the dr. and the very first words out of his mouth were “Wow! WOW!!! I can really see a difference in your mouth!! Great job R (and mommy)!!” R started beaming, and then I really took a good look and I CAN see improvement in her bite. It’s worked so well that we only have to adjust for 1 more week, and then she can have the top appliance removed at her next appointment (6 weeks). She is beyond excited! What a great lesson for R in diligence and commitment. Smile

Then, because they were so impressed with what we had done, they went ahead and showed me how to adjust the bottom one which is normally done in the office only. It’s not too bad (GULP!) and then hopefully we can get that one out quicker too. The bottom take longer to show results (more bone involved), but they expect it to be done much earlier than most patients. They were telling us that we would be amazed at the number of patients who have these appliances put in and never follow through, don’t follow the treatment plan, and waste their time and money. I was stunned! After spending thousands of dollars for it all, and then not follow up?! WHY BOTHER?! They were so surprised that we had done it every day and were willing to do the harder, bottom appliance. Very, very sad. Frown

what is an appliance? a retainer? is it head gear?

    Brenda,

She has palate expanders in. They are cemented on to her teeth, similar to braces, but they are adjusted slowly over time to make her mouth bigger. We are trying to make room for all her teeth to come down…there isn’t enough room.

I’ll bet that is uncomfortable! Well done to you both for persevering.

    Ouch! And double ouch!!
