Hong Kong updates
We all talked to Daddy again this morning, just as he was getting ready for bed. We struggled with the quality again, so our talk was short. On a positive note, we’ll have all the kinks worked out before we ever move there.
J and his boss spent their morning meeting with a (major) customer, and then spent the afternoon looking at housing options in the Tai Po area. J’s boss was aghast at the housing prices (what a great word…aghast…it makes me giggle just t say it, but I digress…) and now realizes that J wasn’t just pulling the numbers he submitted out of thin air. In fact, J’s estimates were a bit too conservative. J has never been one to exaggerate as his word, reputation and witness are of utmost importance to him (yet another thing I love about my man) . Grumble, grumble at his boss….
(Gee, I went off on another, rabbit trail didn’t I?
Sorry, where was I…..)
Housing!! That’s where I was…. There seems to be a huge gap between cheap/unacceptable housing and expensive/acceptable housing. There is no “middle class”, as we would call it. It’s kind of “all or nothing”. The houses we would find acceptable are exorbitant in price. When I say exorbitant, I mean that. A house with 4-5 bedrooms rents for $10,000 a month. $10,000 A MONTH!!!
Tai Po wasn’t all that impressive according to J. It was a bedroom community of Hong Kong and there wasn’t much there. We would have to drive 15-20 minutes to get to everything which we really don’t want to do. The expense of a car, insurance, learning how to drive, the STRESS of driving, finding a vehicle big enough for all of us….crazy. We hope to be closer to things and be able to use public transportation or taxis. Or a driver…..
(Hey, I can dream!!)
Hrmmmm, what else?
OH! J got the name of a family that lives in the area that have three children and they homeschool. They are from TN, and he is a marine biologist. J has called him and they are setting up a time to meet tomorrow (our tonight,
) so he can get the scoop on how things work. International schools are outrageous in price, so homeschooling is looking like a viable option at this point. We’ll just have to see…..
I’m really tired and can’t seem to think of anything else. My littlest one has a bad cold and is up at night, coughing. We both go right back to sleep, but it’s still interrupted sleep so we’re not well rested. She’s taking a nice long nap, but Mama isn’t so lucky. I wonder if the kids could amuse themselves while I nap??

Gee, guess you will have to just stay here instead
[I can “dream”, too!]. No; seriously, I hope all you want comes to fruition and that it all turns out well for every one of you. You will be sorely missed by all of us — which is a testimony to what great folks you are. What an exciting prospect. As a Korean War vet (non-combat) and someone who grew up during the “cold war”, the two governments I will never feel secure with are the Russians and the Chinese (and now we can throw militant Islam into the mix over there). But, I’m old and not as daring as I was years ago. Praying for you all. Your semisubterranean septuagenarian a.k.a. the cellar-dweller.
